History, nature and tradition

A little gem of Abruzzo in the mountains of the national park, suspended between myth and reality

Opi, a village suspended in time

Where history, legend and breathtaking views meet

Just a few minutes from Camping Le Foci, lies Opi, one of the most charming villages in Abruzzo. Recognised among Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages, Opi has preserved its medieval character, with stone houses built side by side, forming a striking natural wall to protect the town and its ancient past.

The village overlooks an extraordinary panorama: a natural amphitheatre dominated by Monte Marsicano, the wooded valleys of Val Fondillo , and the green peaks of the Monti Marsicani.Every corner of Opi tells of a deep connection between people and mountains..

Origins and meaning of the name

Between mythology and archaeology

The origin of the name “Opi” is steeped in mystery and legend. Some of the most fascinating theories connect it to:

  • Ope, an ancient Roman goddess of the Earth, sister and wife of Saturn, daughter of the Sky and of Vesta — protector of fertility and abundance.
  • Opice, a priestess of the Temple of Vesta, believed to have once stood on the very mountain the village now inhabits.
  • The most likely theory links the name to the Latin “Oppidum”, meaning “fortified village”, in perfect harmony with the defensive layout of the town, developed around the year 1000

The houses, built along the edge of the cliff, form a true natural barrier: a simple yet effective defensive system, typical of fortified villages in the central Apennines.
